GoldfinchAfter a secret online ballot, Year 10 have selected The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt as our first choice for the Virtual Year 10 Book Club. The central protagonist is a teenager who is plunged into a much-altered world after a traumatic event in NYC.  Readers will chart Theo Decker’s descent into the criminal underworld, in a plot centred on a small, strangely captivating painting of a goldfinch.

Vanity Fair’s review concluded: “Joy and sorrow exist in the same breath, and by the end The Goldfinch hangs in our stolen heart.”

The choice of novel is particularly apt as a charm of goldfinch can now be seen fluidly fluttering over the St Mary’s trees, perhaps attracted by the peace and quiet. Our second novel will be Bram Stoker’s Dracula – I certainly hope the Book Club’s prophetic powers will not bring him to the St Mary’s skies!
