For one of their Donaldson Week activities, the MIV (Year 8) were asked to create several different polyhedra using cocktail sticks and midget gems. They made some excellent solids and also ate quite a few of their resources!

After the break we discussed the shapes that made the strongest structures and then, armed with a packet of spaghetti and marshmallows, they were challenged to make the tallest, free-standing tower. The students put a good deal of thought into this and using triangles as their basic shape they built some interesting towers. Unfortunately, a few did collapse but the prize for the tallest tower was finally awarded to Lottie and Eve.
