As part of the International 'Big Draw' Week in school, EmpowerHerVoice (EHV) hosted a T-shirt printing workshop with the Art Department, where students were able to screen print a design on an ethically sourced T-shirt.

EmpowerHerVoice is a platform that facilitates the empowerment of women through communication - such as talks, exhibits, events etc. It was recently established at Calne and since then, the group has met every other week to discuss prominent issues faced by women and given a presentation to the UIV (Year 9) girls on empowering one another as part of their Donaldson Week.

Screen printing is usually the process of pressing ink via a stencilled mesh screen to come up with a printed design and is effective for printing textiles, artwork and also on fabric. Students had a choice between three T-shirt colours and four designs, two of which were designed by Rosie (UVI - Year 13), with the slogan, 'Empowered Women Empower Women'. One of the designs was a quote by the ‘Riot grrrls’ (1999): 'I believe with my whole heart mind body that girls constitute a revolutionary soul force that can and will change the world for real.'

In order to adhere to social distancing rules, each year group met at a different lunch time from Monday-Thursday and were taught how to screen print using an ink colour of their choice. Thanks to the patience of the wonderful Art Department staff, by the end of each lunch session, the girls left with a beautiful new T-shirt and with the knowledge of how to screen print.

By the end of the week, we had sold out completely, raising £277 in total by selling each T-shirt for £12. This money will be going to EmpowerHerVoice and will be given to their charity of the year, which is being decided soon, with suggestions coming from EHV groups worldwide.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the workshop, and to the Art Department for their support. We hope to host more fundraising events to empower women all over the world.
