During our Friday Art lesson, on 13th October, we visited Lacock Abbey to see the Thresholds Exhibition by Mat Colllishaw. Using the latest multi-sensory technology, the exhibition restages ‘one of the earliest exhibitions of photography in 1839, when British scientist William Henry Fox Talbot first presented his photographic prints to the public’.
In order to celebrate the National Day of Spain (Dia nacional), which marks the anniversary of Columbus' landing in the New World, I organised a Spanish themed supper and a fiesta for the whole school.
St Mary's Calne is incredibly lucky to have an established orchard right in the middle of the school site and on Thursday 12th October, we took full advantage of this by holding our first Apple Day.
On 11th October Headmistress, Dr Kirk, led an assembly in Chapel, supported by members of the Head Girl’s team, to mark International Day of the Girl, an international observance day declared by the UN in 2012.
On the evening of Tuesday 10th October, we were delighted to welcome Dr Helen Czerski from University College London, who gave us a fascinating lecture about the science behind bubbles.
On Thursday 5th October, all the Sixth form biologists had the unique opportunity to visit Porton Down near Salisbury for the day to attend some fascinating lectures about what they do at Public Health England and then in the afternoon we were lucky enough to be taken on tours around their labs.
Thanks to the superb organisation of Mrs Kingsland and Mrs Haydon, on 5th October five UV girls - Amena, Elisabeth, Georgia, Lucy and Uyi - boarded a train bound for Oxford University (specifically their institute for Mathematics and Computer Science).
On 4th October, some of the UV girls gave a presentation in chapel on North Korea.
On Tuesday 3rd October, the Fifth Form girls attended the first of three Elevate Education seminars, entitled 'Study Sensei'.
On Wednesday 27th September, Grosstête held their annual Company Supper. The theme was ‘A Night at the Movies’ and the night was a huge success!
On Tuesday 26th September, a group of approximately 60 Old Girls, several current parents and the alumnae relations reps from the UVI Head Girl's Team, gathered in the Ballroom of the Lansdowne Club in London, to witness an evening of networking with a difference.
On 23rd September we held our annual Sixth Form Open Day for the UV girls. This is an opportunity for girls and their parents to hear a bit more about life in the Sixth Form and how it differs from the rest of their time at St Mary’s.
