On 1st February, St Mary's entered two teams for Youthspeak, The Rotary Club's Public Speaking Competition, held at The Horsham School, and competing against local state and independent schools.
St Mary’s was very pleased to welcome back Dr Jon Tabbert to speak to the girls about the admissions process to US Universities on Tuesday 31st January. Attendance was once again very impressive, with nearly 20 girls attending and reflecting the growing interest in the US university sector.
St Mary’s Calne pupils are delighted to have come top of the Wiltshire Schools’ A Level 2016 League Table published online by The Telegraph on 19th January 2017, which is based on data published by the Department for Education (DfE) in January 2017.
Congratulations are due to three different teams from St Mary’s Calne who have qualified for the semi-finals of the Student Investor Challenge.
On Friday 27th January, we were lucky to be able to welcome Simon Heathcoat-Amory, an Investment Director at Rathbones PLC, to deliver a presentation to the Sixth Form girls and their parents on ‘Your money – Your future’.
On Wednesday 25th January, academic scholars from all year groups attended the annual Dinner for Academic Scholars in the Dining Room. Our guest speaker was Janet Entwistle, (pictured), current CEO at Ainscough, a crane hire firm with an annual turnover of over £120m. She trained as a barrister and has held a number of legal and management positions in a very impressive career.
On Tuesday 24th January, Dr Michael Scott, broadcaster and writer, addressed the school on the topic of the Gritty Realities of Ancient Greece.
On Saturday 14th January, the girls from Gibbins House left Calne for Radley College at 6pm with some very tired sports players!
On Sunday 22nd January, 18 girls spent the day practising their micro-navigation skills in preparation for their Gold Duke of Edinburgh's expedition.
On 18th January, we were delighted to welcome Art Historian, Professor Gemma Blackshaw, who spoke to us on What is History of Art and Why Does it Matter?
In October 2016, Vicky (UV Form) successfully undertook the Mathematical Olympiad for Girls, being awarded a Distinction, and was invited to take part in the British Mathematical Olympiad Round 1 (BMO1) in December. Vicky performed so well - gaining a second Distinction - that she has now qualified for the BMO2, which takes place on 26th January - an amazing achievement.
The girls had been eagerly anticipating 'Live Band Night', which the Parents' Guild of St Mary's (PGSM) had organised for them on 14th January.
