Janet EntwistleOn Wednesday 25th January, academic scholars from all year groups attended the annual Dinner for Academic Scholars in the Dining Room. Our guest speaker was Janet Entwistle, (pictured), current CEO at Ainscough, a crane hire firm with an annual turnover of over £120m. She trained as a barrister and has held a number of legal and management positions in a very impressive career.

There were pre-dinner drinks for Sixth Form students, where they enjoyed the opportunity to meet our guest speaker and to glean her insights on successfully navigating a career in Law and Management and to discuss a wide range of current affairs with her. The girls were then treated to a delicious supper provided by Mrs Linda Thomas and her catering team, and enjoyed the opportunity to mix with academic scholars from other year groups.

After the dinner, we enjoyed listening to Ms Entwistle tell us about how her career has progressed and what she has learnt through it all. Although she never envisioned herself leading a large crane hire firm, she spoke of the importance of staying flexible to take advantage of opportunities when they arise, especially as the world becomes increasingly dynamic. She spoke of what had led her to study Law, stressing the importance of having passion for what you do, since one's career forms such an important part of one's life. Furthermore, she spoke about how she loved to identify and solve problems within organisations and to work as part of a team to achieve the best possible outcome. Although her talk was of particular interest to students considering careers in Law or Management, there was plenty of wisdom for all of our scholars to take on board.

Finally, our Head of Scholars, Yasmin in UVI, gave a well-received Vote of Thanks to Ms Entwistle for her stimulating and inspiring talk. The event was a most enjoyable evening and an excellent way to celebrate the contribution made by our academic scholars to everyday school life here at St Mary’s.
