On Saturday 13th October, our inaugural 'Showcase of Art and the Spoken Word' was an exciting display of the creative talent St Mary's has to offer. As part of the Calne Music & Arts Festival, it was open to everyone, including all residents of Calne and guests included parents, local artists and members of the local community.

The evening kicked off with a selection of readings from the girls in the Chapel. The readings ranged from powerful poetry from Sisan, to thought-provoking essays on diverse topics such as atheism from Isabel, a short story from Katya and an essay on the power of literature to provoke change from Celia. The readings were followed by a guided exhibition trail through the school, where Director of Art, Mrs Kimberley Appleyard Pallot, introduced various notable artworks made by our girls around the school building.

Along the trail were impromptu and immersive theatre performances from our Sixth Form. Isabella read a Shakespearean sonnet and a piece from Othello, while Kirsten read an extract from Oscar Wilde's An Ideal Husband. There was a pop-up exhibition from Artist in Residence, Miss Litvack, a stop for bubbly refreshments and a tour of the Art rooms. It was a highly enjoyable evening and a great success; we look forward to hosting this event again in years to come.
