On Wednesday 27th November, St Mary’s were privileged to welcome three GB hockey players for two training sessions and a triangular tournament.

Investec are working with a range of schools to provide girls with the opportunity to experience coaching from GB hockey players and promote the socio-economic benefits of girls playing sport. The 1st XI and some U15 Team players attended a hockey clinic during lunchtime where they developed their skills and spoke to the players about their experiences playing for GB.

During the afternoon, the U14A Hockey Team were lucky enough to have an hour and a quarter of training before going into a tournament with Sheldon and St John’s Marlborough. Sheldon and St John's joined the girls for a fun and intense session, focusing on some 3D shots on goal, 1v1 attacking skills on the outside of the D, as well as some tricky stick skills looking at getting past a defender successfully and at pace. The three players - Shona McCallin, Lizzie Neal and Charlotte Watson - spoke about their experiences of playing professional hockey, what challenges they faced, and discussed the different roles they had on the team. This was a great opportunity to provide the students with female role models to look up to, especially as women continue to face barriers to participating in sport in society.

The afternoon ended in a mixed triangular, with all the students put together in three teams, where Lizzie Neal and Charlotte Watson were able to coach and provide feedback from the sidelines. St John’s and Sheldon were very grateful to join us for this excellent opportunity, and they brought along a group of students who really enjoyed playing hockey. A signed GB Investec playing top was awarded to the player of the afternoon, and this was given to Eva-Rose from St Mary's.
