Team Information

Girls can choose whether they wish to be part of a competitive team or not. In recent years we have fielded 1st and 2nd Lacrosse, 1st, 2nd and 3rd Netball and a 1st Hockey team. However, increasing numbers at team practice would suggest that it will notbe long before we can field an additional team in each sport.  In the Summer Term, there are 4 tennis teams and 1 athletics team.  Girls who choose not to play competitive team sport are encouraged to keep fit and healthy and a wide of range of options is available for them on Tuesday afternoons.  In addition, all girls are encouraged to join some of the optional sports clubs and activities that take place every week.  In addition to lesson time and specific school allocated times, Sixth Form girls may use the Sports Centre facilities during public members’ time (see below).

Sixth Form Sports Centre Usage

In addition to lesson time and specific school allocated times, Sixth Form girls may use the Sports Centre facilities during public members’ time.  So that we can ensure the safety of Sixth Form girls during this time, it is important that we receive parental permission for this and written acknowledgement from parents and girls of the rules that should be followed and any risks that may arise.  A form is sent to parents in August for signature and return.

The Head of PE will brief all girls at the start of the academic year on:

Procedures for shared use
Sports Centre etiquette
Clothing and footwear
A sensible approach to exercise
How to book classes.

Girls will be advised of suitable times during which they may share the use of the Fitness Suite and Swimming Pool with public members.
Public members’ use is overseen by suitably qualified Sports Centre staff and changing facilities for the Fitness Suite and Swimming Pool are always the same sex.
If girls wish to join a public members’ class, rather than following her own programme in the Swimming Pool or Fitness Suite, parents will be sent a letter from the Sports Centre in advance of the class which explains the booking and cancellation process of additional classes.

Sport at St Mary's

Sport plays a very important part in our life at St Mary's. With the ever-increasing demand and pressure on teenage girls, we strongly believe in the benefits of both individual and team sports and all girls are encouraged to participate whatever their ability. Learning to work and play as a team teaches trust, increases resilience and builds confidence and self-esteem; all valuable qualities which can be transferred to everyday life. In the first few years at St Mary’s this can not only generate a wonderful camaraderie but also an important sense of belonging. Both the staff and girls take pride in the girls’ own personal and collective achievements at all levels. Whilst at the top end we strive for excellence, providing the opportunity for our more able athletes to develop and maximise their own potential whilst maintaining enjoyment in Sport for everyone.

In recent years the strength and depth of sporting talent has increased and we are enjoying an improving reputation in Sport. There have been many individual and team successes; Highlights include the U13 Lacrosse team winning the West of England Schools Tournament, the Ski team became GB champions and our U16 and U14 Netball teams won their Area Tournament. Several girls represent the county in Lacrosse and Athletics and we are hoping to send our promising athletes through the county development academy system in Netball and Hockey this season. We are also proud to have girls who have represented the Welsh and English National Lacrosse teams, trained for the GB Pony Eventing team, competed in Junior West Lacrosse, South West Gymnastics and Synchronised Swimming.

The excellent facilities include a 25m, six-lane swimming pool, gymnasium, dance studio, 24 tennis courts (comprising 16 astro courts for the Summer Term and 8 hard courts), 8 netball courts, a full-sized Astro Turf pitch, grass pitches and a superbly equipped fitness suite.  Girls regularly use the facilities throughout the day, evening and at the weekend, whether playing for the school teams or for personal fitness or enjoyment.
