Mathematics

Mathematics Enrichment Trip to Fleet Air Arm Museum

Mathematics is a core subject that is studied by all pupils up to IGCSE level and it is a popular subject in the Sixth Form where there is a healthy take up for both Mathematics and Further Mathematics.

We aim to make the subject accessible and enjoyable for all pupils, whatever their starting point.  There is a programme of investigative mathematics and thinking skills in the LIV and MIV Forms. A host of Mathematical activities are run throughout the year for pupils of all ages and ability levels, including UKMT Mathematical Challenges and the Inter-Company Mathematics Challenge for the Fourth Forms.

The Mathematics department promotes the consistency of mathematical learning across the curriculum.  Continued close liaison with other departments is aimed at enabling girls to use and apply Mathematics effectively in all their subject areas.

IGCSE course

Currently, we follow the Edexcel IGCSE Mathematics course which starts during the Autumn Term of the UIV Form.  All exams are at the end of the UV Form. All girls enter at the Higher Tier, aiming for levels 9 to 5, but those who experience particular difficulty are able to transfer to the Foundation Tier.

Sixth Form courses

Mathematics is a popular subject, with almost one half of the LVI Form taking one of our courses.  Girls who are thinking of reading Mathematics at university may also work on a supervised extended project (EPQ) of their choice and we help to prepare those who have made Oxbridge applications for the entrance examinations and interviews.

With the relatively new A Level course, girls are expected to study Pure Maths, Mechanics and Statistics over two years.  A small number of girls opt to take A Level Further Mathematics, as well as the normal A Level Mathematics course.  The Further Mathematicians will aim to complete the A Level Mathematics course in the LVI and then take the Further Mathematics course in the UVI. Additionally, we offer the AS Mathematics which the girls can take as part of their supra-curricula options - the course will be studied over two years. The AS course is particularly suitable for girls who are taking A Level science subjects.
