In our final episode of the current series of podcasts on the theme of Volunteering recorded during lockdown, Susannah meets up with Flora and Zara who volunteered (while in Year 12) with the Guides and Brownies.
Girlguiding relies on the support of volunteers in order for it to operate and we are very fortunate to have the Girlguiding Calne District Commissioner on our staff. Mrs Samantha Handy has been involved with Girlguiding since she was a child and is passionate about giving the children in the local area the same opportunities and experiences she benefited from, along with a number of other staff from a wide range of areas in the St Mary’s Calne Community. Over the past year we have had nine girls in the LVI volunteering in a number of different Calne units as Young Leaders with the Rainbows, Brownies and Guides and their efforts have been very much appreciated by all.
Shortly before lockdown I attended one of the sessions and the Brownies were having a lot of fun with Year 12 girls, Kunmi and Aoife. Having a few extra volunteers at a session enables less confident children who may have recently joined to get more involved. I spoke with a few of the parents, as well as the unit leaders, and they expressed real gratitude for all the help and enthusiasm that our LVI Young Leaders provide.
Well done to all the girls who volunteered and continue to volunteer with this project and thank you to Flora and Zara for sharing your experiences with us. A special thank you to Susannah for leading the discussions and creating this fantastic series of podcasts.
