Treats & Beats: ‘Nocturne’

  • Post Category:Music

This week’s Treats & Beats celebrates our School Accompanist, Ms Jemima Palfreyman. Her accomplished piano playing has captivated the girls and staff at school and her most recent project celebrates International Women’s Day 2021…

Ms Palfreyman (piano) collaborated with flautist, Lance Bombardier Rachel Johnson from the Lancashire Artillery Band, to showcase Nocturne. The piece, for flute and piano, is by Bolton-based composer, Geraldine Green.

Lance Bombardier Rachel Johnson and Ms Palfreyman met at a Lancaster Artillery Band rehearsal eight years ago (LBdr Johnson was already a serving musician, Ms Palfreyman was considering joining), and liked each other’s playing so much they promptly formed a duo. They have performed regularly in recital series and arts festivals ever since, in locations from Salisbury to Ripon, and at venues including Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall and London’s St Martin in the Fields. Ms Palfreyman no longer plays with the band but the duo still perform together frequently. At this time of year, outside of pandemic restrictions, they would usually present a programme of music for flute and piano by women composers. This piece Nocturne, is often the encore.
