This week, the Fourth Form English teachers are launching Read for Good 2020!
Over the last eight years, St Mary’s Calne have raised nearly £9,000 for the charity – this year we want to smash our personal best of £2001.10.
The charity Read for Good encourages children to read through its unique motivational approach, inspiring reluctant readers to give reading a go, and keen readers to read more widely. Pupils can choose whatever they want to read – from comics to classics and audio books to blogs – they are not being assessed, it’s all about reading for fun. And, they are motivated to read because the money they raise in sponsorship helps to provide a regular supply of brand new books and a resident storyteller to every major children’s hospital in the UK.
Parents and pupils tell us that the freedom to choose what to read, combined with the knowledge that they are directly helping children in hospital, compels pupils to get involved.
All you have to do is:
- Plan a list of books to read. Remember, girls can read whatever they want: books, e-books, poetry, comics – anything goes, as well as listening to audio books.
- Find sponsors among family and friends. The easiest way to sponsor a girl is by entering our postcode, SN11 0DF, at https://readathon.secure.force.com/sponsor (which family and friends can use too) or you can download a sponsorship form from the website: www.readforgood.org
- Update your Reading Record here: https://forms.gle/pbF9CP3zrXLDJ5Hs9 so we can keep track of how we are doing. I will send out a regular update on our progress.
Please do support Readathon. We’ll be helping children in hospitals get books, and our school receives free books worth 20% of our grand sponsorship total (which we can then donate to local schools in Calne) – so there really is something in it for everyone.
