Music Scholars’ Performances

2nd July 2020

In the last of this summer’s musical ‘soupçons’ from our scholars, today we have another two offerings in store.  Firstly, sisters Belinda (Year 12) and Tessa (Year 10) sing the famous duet, Laudamus te, from Vivaldi’s Gloria.  They are accompanied on the piano by Mrs Fryar, to whom we owe an enormous vote of thanks, as she has provided the backing tracks for all of the virtual vocal performances we have enjoyed this term.

Meanwhile, Lydia (Year 11) has just been awarded a Music Exhibition for next year as she heads into the Sixth Form.  She is going to sign off our collection by opening her account with a piano solo portraying the marvellously rich tonal palate of Sir Richard Rodney Bennett.  Her chosen piece, Rosemary’s Waltz, was originally written for the 1985 BBC TV drama Tender is the night, based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1934 novel of the same name.

We thank Belinda, Tessa and Lydia, and indeed everyone who has featured in this term’s series of recordings, for taking time out of their busy schedules for our delectation.

This week we continue our summer of musical offerings by featuring two of our Year 12 scholars.  Megan entertains us with another popular vocal number in the shape of Kurt Weill’s Stay Well whilst Clem celebrates the Pan myth by playing an atmospheric flute solo called Pan Overheard. As ever, we are very grateful to them for taking time out of their busy work schedules to make these recordings for us.

The summer series of lockdown recordings continues this week with some contrasting pieces from two of our Year 9 Scholars. Deborah performs the much-loved Baroque aria Where’er you walk by Handel while Izzy sings the famous jazz standard Misty by Erroll Garner.  Both girls have made outstanding contributions to the work of the department this year and we are grateful to them for taking the time to entertain us this week.

As promised, we will be bringing you more lockdown recordings during the second half of term.  This week’s offering is from Elan (Year 11), singing the quintessentially English song ‘If there were dreams to sell‘ by one of the greats of his time, John Ireland.  It has been an excellent year for Elan, as she has enjoyed success in the Cecilia James Music Festival and in the Sir Bryn Terfel Singing Competition; we are grateful to her for taking the time to provide this week’s feature.

As promised in the issue before Half Term, we are delighted to share with you another recording of a Music Scholar performing from home. This week’s offering is from Hannah (Year 13) singing Broadway Baby. Hannah has entertained us wonderfully on many occasions over the years. We are very grateful to her for providing this week’s performance and wish her well for the future.

In years gone by, the month of May has brought us much joy in the Music Department, as the Scholars present their annual concert.  Whilst the present circumstances do not lend themselves to a live event this year, it hasn’t stopped some of our Year 13 Leavers sending us recordings of themselves from home.  We hope you will enjoy this selection from Shubha, Charlie and Yu Ying to set the ball rolling, and we hope to be able to share some more performances with you during the second half of term.
