Lacrosse 7th September 2013

St Mary’s entered two senior lacrosse teams into the first ever Sherborne Super 8’s. Both St Mary’s teams were evenly matched on paper but one arguably had the much tougher draw in the tournament.

Unfortunately Team Sky had to play the only Haberdashers ‘8’ who were experienced at this type of small sided game, as well as the Queen Anne’s 1st team. So with two defeats in the opening three games it took time for the team to rebuild confidence. But under the captaincy of Ellie the team began to gel and move the ball more effectively. Sophie and Bella were on fine goal scoring form, whilst Hannah made some great saves. Meanwhile in the other section Team Navy got off to a good start, gelling quickly against easier opposition and enjoying three convincing wins. The final pool game was against Queen Anne’s 2nd team and with great desire to reap revenge after last year, Navy put together a huge team effort, displaying great grit and determination and calm heads under pressure, winning 4-3. As winners of Pool 2 the navy team went on to play Queen Anne’s 1st team. Up steps Emily! Fresh from the tour her outstanding saves boosted the team still further as the attack put away the goals the other end and we went on to win 4-0. Meanwhile Haberdashers’ were romping through the field in the other half of the draw and conceding few goals and the final was looking like a tough prospect. 3-0 down after 5 minutes it was time to dig deep. With a well-worked goal from captain Annie, a glimpse of hope emerged and after another goal by Georgi it lifted our heads. As we crept back into it Emily raised her game yet again and the intensity grew. Another goal from Annie and Haberdahsers’ started to panic. We kept our heads and moved the ball quickly and accurately and as the time ran out Georgi scored a glorious winner off a fast break. 4-3 and Winners! What a start to the season! Congratulations to all the players.
