‘Together at last!’ was the resounding feeling that resonated throughout this year’s Founders’ Day celebrations: the first large school event for almost 18 months. It was a joyful occasion full of warmth and gratitude, with everyone expressing their heartfelt thanks for the efforts made to present the day’s events in a covid-safe way.
On Saturday evening, the UVI (Year 13) girls, families and guests were able to enjoy a wonderful gala evening to celebrate their time at St Mary’s. With careful consideration of all the COVID rules and regulations, we hosted an outdoor event with a sit-down drinks reception kindly sponsored by the CGA, followed by dinner.
On Wednesday 23rd June, the LIV (Year 7) went on a day trip to visit Bristol Aquarium. LIV scientists embarked on a fascinating journey, diving in and discovering up close, the wonders of the deep in Bristol’s colourful aquarium.
During the final week of Summer Term 2021, the LIV (Year 7) were tasked with designing and creating a high fashion outfit, entirely made from the contents of the recycling bin.
Niamh (LIV) had a wonderful few days at Windsor, winning the first race and being placed in all the others.
Congratulations go to all the girls in the MIV (Year 8) who took on and met the challenge of the ISEB (The Independent School Examinations Board) Project Qualification, in its inaugural year at St Mary’s. This qualification was devised by the creator of the EPQ, which many girls in the Sixth Form do alongside their A Levels, to allow themselves to pursue an interest that lies outside the A Level specification and to demonstrate they have the independent research and learning skills required at university and beyond.
On Tuesday 29th June, an author from Brighton, Juno Dawson, gave a virtual lecture about her story and her most recent books, ‘What’s the T?’ and ‘Wonderland’.
On Tuesday 22nd June, the UVI (Year 13) and UV (Year 11) took part in half-day workshops with stand-up comedian Sam from The Smirk Experience, who has trained the likes of Google, Lloyds of London and Investec.
On Wednesday evening, we enjoyed a wonderful talk by 2000 leaver Catherine Pease on Architecture and Design. Introduced by Fernande van Schelle, Chair of the Calne Girls' Association, Catherine shared details of her many and varied projects from around the world.
MIV (Year 8) have been writing and illustrating their own picture story children’s book for the students of Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 at St Margaret’s Prep with the help of their teachers Mr James and Mrs Owen.
On Saturday 26th June, the UV (Year 11) received an inspirational talk from guest speaker, Ben Walden, on the topic of confidence and leadership as a part of our Sixth Form Preparation Programme.
It’s been a big week for Marguerite (Year 12): she completed her 500 mile cycling challenge in aid of Calne Community Transport.
