Most of the snow had melted and we were blessed with clear, sunny conditions in which to practise the more detailed navigation techniques needed for Gold. Locating starburst sweets tested the accuracy of compass work and fog was simulated using black polybags. ‘Casualties’ obligingly fell unconscious, broke their legs and suffered hypothermia and, after only a little hesitation, were effectively treated by their first aiders who demonstrated that they would have been able to summon help from the Mountain Rescue and signal to the helicopter. The Gold Group is now ready for the Practice Expedition in the Black Mountains after Easter (17th – 20th April).
