On Monday and Tuesday this week, Director of Music, Mr Sutton, took Frances, Katya, Isabella, Sophie, Hope, Ila & Marta from the MIV Form and Thea, Amelia, Gaby, Maiya, Clara and Alicia from the UIV Form to John Bentley School to meet and work collaboratively with their Year 8 and 9 students on the Calne War Memorial Project.
There they met Dr Craig Fees from the Oral History Society who explained how to gather oral history and gave them training in interviewing techniques. The girls then spent Wednesday at the Heritage Centre in Calne, meeting and interviewing members of the Calne community including the Town Mayor, Mrs Mercy Baggs. The girls were fascinated by the stories about the relatives of these men and women who remembered stories of their families involved in the First World War – many of whose names the girls had already seen commemorated on the War Memorial in the churchyard of St Mary’s Parish Church.
This research is the first stage in this project, which will be completed in the Summer Term when the St Mary’s girls will work with pupils from John Bentley school to present a number of compositions about the First World War for performance to the public in St Mary’s Church in June. The girls ended the day with a launch party and were each presented with a Certificate of Excellence by the Mayor.
