Münster Trip 2012
During Half Term, a group of nine students from St Mary's Calne visited Münster, Germany on a German language exchange. After last year’s visit to St Mary’s Calne by some German students from Münster, it was now the St Mary’s girls’ turn to fly over to Germany. The trip took place in Half Term from 10th to 16th February. After an enjoyable flight and a very luxurious bus from Düsseldorf airport to the school, the nine girls arrived at the Freiherr-von-Stein Gymnasium and were greeted by their host families with whom they would spend the following days. On the first weekend the girls spent time with their host families as well as with the entire group and enjoyed activities like ice skating and a trip to the circus. As the students in Germany were not on holiday, our girls had the opportunity to experience a different type of schooling which they did on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. The evenings, however, were filled with pleasant activities such as a visit to the cinema (in German of course), a visit to the town hall of Münster and some shopping.
The last day was even more exciting for Jessica, our UK German Ambassador, who had the opportunity to visit a German Prep School and show the children a video that was recorded in the St Margaret’s German Club; she also brought them some letters that the English students wrote with the hope of setting up some Penpals.
Tuesday was one of the highlights of the trip when the entire group, German and English, set off for Cologne with a visit to the chocolate museum, the famous cathedral, a quiz about the history of the city and a little bit of shopping.
After a very active but enjoyable week and a good journey back to England it can be said that the trip was a great success for the girl’s linguistic knowledge and an exciting experience for all participants.
