On Wednesday 1st February, a selection of girls from Chamber Choir travelled to Merton College, Oxford to enjoy a Choral Scholarship Open Day. It was a busy afternoon that involved singing tuition, choral experience and a tour of the College and Chapel.
Having been welcomed by the Chaplain and the Director of Music, the girls were able to gain musical experience and ask relevant questions about life at Merton. They were then treated to tea and had a rehearsal for Evensong with the Merton Chapel Choir.
Wood’s Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis were particularly thrilling for the girls, as the Chapel choir had a resounding baritone and tenor section which added such colour and depth. Despite the cold, the Evensong was beautifully sung and St Mary’s singers enjoyed the candlelit atmosphere. It was a thoroughly enjoyable day in a college steeped in history.
