Baroness Miller of Chilthorne Domer visits St Mary’s

It was a great privilege that Baroness Miller, Liberal Democrat spokesperson for Home Affairs, came to St Mary’s School to talk with the Sixth Form on the ‘Work and Role of the House of Lords’.  This talk was through the ‘Peers for Schools’ programme which was initiated by Lady Hayman, the first Speaker for the House of Lords.

Baroness Miller gave a fascinating insight into Westminster, the differences between the House of Lords and House of Commons, the changes due to the House of Lords reform and her views on further reform. Baroness Miller provided us with different examples of the type of work carried out in the Lords and described a typical day’s routine.  Baroness Miller opened up the floor to questions early on which provided much discussion, was very thought provoking and showed us some of the complexities involved in the legislative process.
