Burns' Night Supper
Bagpipe music filled the air at the annual Burns' Night Supper held this year on Tuesday 23rd January as Pipe Major Brian Shanahan accompanied by Ellen and Victoria from UV Form ensured that the ceremony kicked off in true traditional style. The haggis received a rather mixed reception from some of the girls, but most tackled the dish with true St Mary’s determination.
Mr Liston began with the very dramatic "Address to the Haggis" delivered in the broadest of Scottish accents making it incomprehensible to non-native speakers! He was followed by Dr Pearson speaking on "the immortal memory" of Robert Burns, outlining the greatness and relevance of the poet today. Mr Botterill bravely stepped in at the eleventh hour after our planned speaker had to cancel and delivered the "Toast to the Lassies" with much style, while our Head Girl Rose responded with a feisty "Toast to the Laddies".
The atmosphere warmed up further when the entertainment got under way. Isobel and Sophie, followed by Lili and Georgina recited some of Burn’s verse, while Maxine and Rebecca delighted us with renditions of the
Skye Boat Song and
Loch Lomond. Finally we all sang
Auld Lang Syne before the bagpipers piped us off to our beds.
