On Saturday 19th January, five St Mary’s girls represented North Wiltshire in the County Cross Country Championships at Marlborough College.
It was a grey wet day and the course was extremely muddy and slippery underfoot. The Minor Girls event was the second race of the morning with sixty runners competing from the six different areas of Wiltshire making it a highly competitive event. The pace of the race was fast and the girls covered a distance of approximately 2000m. St Mary’s athletes put in some outstanding performances with Sophie finishing strongly in 3rd place, Mariella in 11th place and Rosemary in 14th place. To have all three girls in the top twenty was excellent. In the Junior girls event, race four, the course had become extremely cut up making the going even harder. Catriona and Lucy ran well in these testing conditions with Catriona finishing in sixteenth position and Lucy in seventeenth position again out of sixty runners. Lucy is in fact a year young so will be able to compete in this age group next year.
To have all St Mary’s athletes finishing in the top twenty was extremely pleasing and they must be congratulated on their performances on the day.
We now wait to hear if any of St Mary’s athletes have qualified for the South West Championships to be held in Gloucester on 9th February.
