'Music is edifying, for it sets the soul in operation.' John Cage
'Who hears music, feels his soul peopled at once.' Robert Browning
The Music Department is one of the largest departments in the school, comprising three full time staff plus over twenty visiting teachers. The Department works to develop individual talents while seeking to bring the whole community together through music, particularly in Chapel, where every girl has an opportunity to join in, and also to enjoy performances by her friends.
The activities of the Music Department are detailed in the Extra-Curricular section of the website, with an introduction, details of recent choir trips, music from our CD and information about our many instrumental and choral groups.
There is a continuing high demand for Music. At KS3 girls receive two class Music lessons a week. The academic Music programme is balanced by strong practical music making at all levels of the school. At present more than 70% of pupils currently take instrumental or singing lessons.
At St Mary’s girls are entered for the AQA Music GCSE Examination.
Girls can be entered for Music (Edexcel 8501/9501) and Music Technology (Edexcel 8511/9511).
